Edge of Tomorrow-Movie Review

9/10 stars

Edge of Tomorrow is about a war between humans and a new life form that crashes down on earth, which humans have come to calling "mimics". Tom Cruise is basically a spokesperson for the war, and he is forced to join the front lines by the commander. For some complex reasons (which I won't spoil) he begins to realize that he is restarting his day over again every time he dies. As is shown in the trailer, he starts to train with Emily Blunt's character, whom this has happened to before. Together, they have to figure out a way to win this war against the mimics, even though it seems all hope is lost. This movie is really friggin cool. The fact that he is living the same day over and over again may sound repetitious, but the movie makes this repetition funny. Tom Cruise does not start out as an awesome action hero in this movie. In the first half, he is a clueless nimrod, without the slightest battle skills and abilities, and this translates into great laughs for the audience. And, once Cruise becomes a cool action star, he does not lose his emotional depth. He starts to care for Emily Blunt's character, and both of their character arcs are riveting to watch. The plot is solid, but I will abstain from talking about it, because you have to see it for yourself. Both Cruise and Blunt give great performances, making their characters badass but at the same time vulnerable. The concept, of course, is amazing. It is one of the best films that has come out this year. GO SEE THIS MOVIE!
